The first event was a concert that was coming to town that I wanted to take a group of students to go. To promote this event required that I share about it in youth group and sunday school…and that is really about it. I didn’t need to do much more promotion and I knew that there would be a good size group that would participate.

There was another event that I was also promoting at the same time, one that happened a week before the concert. This event, however, took a lot more promotion on my part to get a group maybe a fourth the size that would go to the concert. It was a prayer event. And even though this event was free (the concert cost money) and a shorter time commitment (concert was 3 hours, prayer event was 1 hour), I had to promote it almost to the point of begging people to come. Think about that for a moment…I had to beg Christians to come and pray for an hour.

The hardest group to get to come was not the students as some might expect, but it was their parents. The same parents who want me to help their kids grow spiritually, the same parents who tell me that a biblically solid youth ministry is very important to them, the same parents who sometimes express that they struggle to figure out how to get their kids to want to live for God. These same parents who would want their kids to come to a prayer meeting, and maybe even force them, didn’t come themselves.

As parents we want to pass along to our kids the things that we care about. And kids will very quickly pick up on those things because they are most influenced by their parents, very often caring about the same things their parents do. However, kids are influenced by their parents actions way more than their words. If a parent wants their kids to grow up loving God and taking things like prayer seriously, then parents have to love God and take things like prayer seriously first.

Whether you are a parent now or will be someday, we need to all take seriously the fact that if we want our kids to have certain values in their lives, we first have to possess and act upon those values. Parents, we have no right to get frustrated with our kids for not caring about the values we want them to care about if we do not act like we care about them in front of our kids.

The Bible is very clear that the majority of the responsibility to raise up a child lies with the parents. Parents will pass on a legacy to their children…the question we all need to ask ourselves is what legacy are we passing on to them?
